Philadelphia Unemployment Project
The Philadelphia Unemployment Project has undertaken to expand access to healthcare for people without insurance in Philadelphia and throughout the state. A coalition supporting the Governor's Prescription for Pennsylvania is already operating out of PUP. Next, we hope to dramatically increase our role as a healthcare referral and advocacy resource. We are seeking a healthcare organizer to run this effort, and to organize a large group of uninsured people in the region to support increased access to healthcare.
Primary Responsibilities: Develop a strong understanding of healthcare programs, facilities and resources, both public and private, throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. Promote PUP as a resource for people without insurance or in need of medical access counseling throughout Southeast Pennsylvania. Work with members to flier neighborhoods, reach out to community organizations and houses of worship. Organize events around the issue of healthcare access. Provide counseling to people who are having trouble accessing the healthcare they need, serving both in a referral and advocacy capacity. Organize the uninsured around campaigns to expand access, such at the Prescription for Pennsylania and the City's Neighborhood Health Centers. Assist the Director with the Cover All Pennsylvanians Coalition, outreach, agendas, follow-up, lobbying and events.
Secondary Responsibilities: Assist with PUP member events, social, fundraising and activism. Participate in coalition meetings around other issues, as needed. Work with the Community Organizer to maintain the PUP membership, expand it, organize meetings, communicate with members and organize activities with members that contribute to PUP campaign goals. Assist Community Organizer with statewide organizing as needed. Assist with donor outreach, fundraising, website updates, media tracking and building relationships with peer organizations, community groups and houses of worship. Assist with other campaigns as necessary. Other duties as assigned.

Strong written and verbal communications skills. Willingness to learn complex healthcare systems and PUP's unique approach to organizing. Proficient with Microsoft Office. Creative, energetic and self-directed. Women and people-of-color strongly encouraged to apply.
Salary commensurate with experience. Strong medical, retirement, dental and other benefits. Generous vacation and medical leave. UNITE-HERE shop. www.philaup.org. The position would begin in late April. Full-time.
