Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger -- Summer Positions

Agency Description: The Greater Philadelphia Coalition
Against Hunger was formed in 1996 to fight hunger through
education, outreach and advocacy. Our education and advocacy
programs work to empower community-based food providers, to
inform and mobilize concerned citizens, and to help shape
public policy. As the sponsor of the annual Walk Against
Hunger, the Coalition brings over 3,000 people together each
spring to raise funds for community-based food assistance
programs. All this happens in a small, close-knit office,
easily accessible by public transportation.

We are seeking service-learning students, work-study
students, interns, and volunteers who would work closely with
Coalition staff to further the goals and objectives of the
Food Stamp Enrollment Campaign.

Depending on interest and skills, duties might include:
• Pre-screen potentially eligible clients at various
community sites. Assist eligible clients in applying for
food stamps. If desired, accompany clients to their County
Assistance Office and directly assist them in overcoming
barriers to enrollment.
• Pre-screen clients who call the Food Stamp
Information Hotline and provide application assistance.
• Place follow-up phone calls to households that
appeared eligible for food stamps when screened. Provide
assistance to those facing difficulties in the application
process and gather information about these barriers for
research purposes.
• Participate in the Coalition’s efforts to analyze
barriers to participation in the Food Stamp Program. Analyze
data on rates of denials, reasons for denials, and reasons
why people have been dropped out of the program.

Citizen Outreach Director or Assistant Director

Are you ready to make a difference on the most pressing environmental issues of our generation? Are you ready to stand up to the corporations that are compromising the integrity of our democracy? Are you ready to fight discrimination and defend human rights?

We’ve got the job for you!

The Fund for Public Interest Research is currently hiring Citizen Outreach Directors and Assistant Directors to run grassroots canvass offices around the country.

Over the last 15 years, we’ve helped sign up 400,000 members for the state PIRGs, raised millions of dollars each year for the Sierra Club’s priority campaigns, expanded Human Rights Campaigns’ grassroots base into places like Texas, Tennessee and Utah, and much more.

As a Citizen Outreach Director or Assistant Director, you’ll work with environmental and progressive groups like the Sierra Club, Environmental Action, Human Rights Campaign, and state-based environmental groups like Environment California. Your responsibilities include:

- Recruiting, training, supervising and working alongside a staff of 10-40 canvassers.

- Reaching or exceeding your office’s fundraising and membership goals. Most offices have goals of $250,000 raised and 5,000 members identified each year.

- Overseeing all administrative functions related to fundraising, membership development, campaign work and general office management.

- Taking charge of additional campaign field work including news conferences, petition and letter-writing drives, coalition-building and grassroots lobbying.

Directors canvass two to three days per week to train staff, raise money, identify and activate members, and educate the public on the issues.

We have career positions available now for offices in CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IL, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, TX, UT, WA and Washington, DC.

And we offer many opportunities for rapid advancement, as we continue to expand into new locations, work with new progressive groups and implement innovative strategies.

To learn more, visit www.fundcareers.org.

Salary & Benefits:
New staff will earn $23,750-$25,250 in their first year. The Fund offers a generous benefits package that includes college loan assistance and competitive vacation and holiday policies. Staff are encouraged to join our group health care plan.

Additional Qualifications:
We are looking for smart, motivated, action-oriented people who are interested in politics, have a commitment to working for the public interest, and are willing to work hard to make change. To do this work, you need stamina. You need to be resourceful on a shoestring budget. You need to be able to convey the sense of urgency and passion you feel about these issues. (In-depth training on campaign strategies, issues and skills is provided.)

We work campaign hours, and are looking for a minimum commitment through August 2008.

How to Apply:
Email your cover letter and resume to Emily Berens at fundcareers@ffpir.org. Be sure to mention where you saw our job advertised.

2007 Summer Opportunities with the Ghana Health and Education Initiative

I usually don't post volunteer opportunities that require the volunteer to pay, but this opportunity in Ghana looks interesting and the payment is only $1000, which covers food and housing for the duration of the stay.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GHEI (http://www.ghei.org) is a grassroots, community based non-government organization which trains community leaders in the village of Humjibre , Ghana so that they may be qualified to successfully manage the health and education needs of their village and shape their own future.

Session I: June 1- June 18
Girls Empowerment: Volunteers in this session will create a Girls’ Empowerment Program for middle and elementary school girls in the village. The program will run according to schedules allowed for by school and family commitments. Topics for the program can include health, education, and career opportunities. Possible events can include motivational speakers, health activities, etc. The program can be run in camp or workshop format, depending on the preferences of volunteers and availability of girls.

Session II: July 1- July 18
Malaria Prevention: Volunteers will develop and coordinate health activities focused on malaria for the village. A cross section of the community will be targeted including women's groups, teenagers, school children, and the general public. In addition to teaching about the disease and the prevention techniques currently available volunteers will be responsible for distributing treated mosquito nets. They will need to ensure that all villagers receiving a treated mosquito net know how to correctly use it.

Session III: August 1 - August 18
De-worming and Hygiene: Volunteers will help coordinate and de-worm children in the village as part of GHEI's twice yearly de-worming campaign. This will involve helping to determine the most appropriate population and helping to create a sustainable and locally run program to tackle this health issue. Volunteers will also create and coordinate a short supplemental curriculum for health and hygiene for nursery and primary school students to augment the effects of this intervention. In addition to distributing medication, volunteers will be helping to distribute shoes to those children who have none.

How Do I Apply? The application as well as complete details about Ghana Health and Education Initiative’s opportunities are available at http://www.ghei.org/index_files/Short_term_opportunities.htm.
